Working with Third Party Providers to Support International Students’ Career Development
Presented by: Kendra Northington, Kwan Segal, Elif Balin, Nicole Anderson, and Sonia Liang
The NCDA 2019 Webinar series presents:
Working with Third Party Providers to Support International Students’ Career Development
Presented by:
Kendra Northington, Kwan Segal, Elif Balin,
Nicole Anderson, and Sonia Liang
According to the survey research results of the NCDA International Student Services Committee (ISSC), there are consistent challenges in higher education to provide effective career services to international students. Some common struggles are the complexity of job and internship search processes, employer perceptions about international student work permit and visa procedures, and limited network and resources for international students in the U.S. The NCDA-ISSC recognizes the importance of addressing third-party service providers and resources outside of higher education settings that often emerge as a response to the unmet career development needs of international students. Third-party providers can be non-profit or for-profit organizations that offer career resources and job search platforms to international students. They also include technological platforms that disseminate or facilitate job opportunities in the U.S. and other countries.
Career development professionals need to become more familiar and competent with these services to assess their credibility and potential usefulness to meet international students’ career needs. This webinar aims to help career development professionals increase their awareness and gain more knowledge regarding the ethical and effective use of third party providers and resources as additional resources.
In this webinar, you’ll learn:
- the functions and trends of third-party providers in the U.S. and how they can address the challenges of supporting international students in the higher education setting;
- the various types of third-party providers that provide career services to international students, including the service features, pros and cons, and examples;
- how to make ethical and multiculturally competent decisions when working with third-party providers

The NCDA 2017 Webinar series:
Using Career Development to Transform a School’s Culture
Presented by: Dr. Cal Crow
Center for Learning Connections
Edmonds Community College, Lynnwood, WA
Wednesday, January 18, 2017
For years NCDA has been working to get career development infused into the K-12 academic curriculum, with mixed results. It’s time to reverse the order. The current education system is not designed for student success. Giving it a career development focus will change that. Imagine a school system organized around the strengths, skills, talents, interests and dreams of students. Rather than getting through the curriculum, the goal is on getting through to students. The curriculum is a vehicle to help make this occur, but is not an end in itself. Its purpose is to ensure that every student acquires knowledge and skill sets that will lead to a successful future.
This webinar will demonstrate ways to transform and design a new approach to career development delivery in K-12. NCDA School Career Counselor and Specialist Constituency will provide online, follow-up discussion forums to promote member networking and sharing of effective practices.
Viewers of the webinar are invited to leave Comments in the Discussion Forum (click here) to continue the dialog. (Members of the SCCS Constituency group will be monitoring and responding to all Comments.)
About Dr. Crow:
Cal Crow is the founder and director of the Center for Efficacy and Resiliency at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Washington. He has been a teacher, counselor, counselor educator, consultant and trainer. He is currently working to help create success cultures in education and corrections systems. Cal has presented at numerous NCDA conferences and at two meetings of the Australian Career Development Association. He was one of three individuals to help revise the National Career Development Guidelines. He holds a Ph.D. from Arizona State University.

Reframing Career to Care
-- presented by Edward Colozzi
The traditional way most people view career relates to paid work, and this narrow focus dilutes efforts to make effective sustaining interventions in peoples’ lives. In recognition of purpose, personal agency, and spirituality in career construction, participants are introduced to Depth-Oriented Values Extraction (DOVE) and review several specific interventions designed to move beyond objective assessment and toward the client’s inner “true self”.
Webinar attendees will leave this session with 1) A brief overview of the career-life paradigm that informs the DOVE process and fundamentals, 2) the recently modified wellness paradigm that re-frames career to giving and/or receiving CARE across all career-life roles, including the addition of a new life role that affects virtually every individual, and 3) a PDF that provides a succinct summary of the paradigms, relevant references, Internet resources and suggested tips for career services providers working in a variety of K-12, college and agency settings, including multi-cultural clients and students.
Edward Anthony Colozzi, Ed.D., (careercoachcolozzi@verizon.net and www.creatingcareerswithconfidence.com) is the owner of Career Development and Counseling Services in Massachusetts and provides corporate trainings, individual counseling, and motivational speeches for adults and youth. Ed pioneered and coined the “career-life" paradigm 1977 in Hawaii/throughout Pacific Basin Rim, to re-frame career as multiple roles people play throughout life and focuses on spirituality/wellness in the context of career-life choices. He expanded his paradigm in 2011 to focus on career as CARE. His work with "discovering client callings" involves Depth Oriented Values Extraction (DOVE). He has published book chapters and articles on these and related topics as well as a self-paced workbook, "Creating Careers with Confidence". Ed has served in teaching, counseling, and career development center coordinator positions and worked at both graduate and undergraduate levels for over forty years. He has provided numerous staff development workshops in a variety of national and international settings. He is the founder/co-host of the #schools2life Tweet Chat and the LinkedIn schools2life Discussion Group. Winnowing Career Assessments in the Information Age: Career Assessment Instruments, the Internet, Social Justice, and Professionally Conscientious Practice
Presented by Dr. Chris Wood
Winnowing Career Assessments in the Information Age:
Career Assessment Instruments, the Internet, Social Justice, and Professionally Conscientious Practice
The internet provides increased access to career information and career assessment instruments. Such access affords more people than ever before with career development resources. Moreover this increased access via the internet is a unique opportunity for career counselors and other career development helping professionals to be agents of social justice in helping traditionally marginalized groups of society utilize such interventions. However, there is little to guide the career counselor and consumer in discerning the quality of career assessment instruments including often even the purpose and/or ‘origin’ of such career assessments.
This webinar discusses this tension among increased access, consumer protection, and quality control and presents resources for professionals to use in evaluating career assessment instruments.
Learning Objectives:
-
Understand the use of career assessments as a social justice issue.
-
Become aware of the advantages and dangers of increased availability of career assessments (via the internet/world wide web) in the information age.
-
Learn several resources for discovering and evaluating career assessment instruments.
